Over the summer of 2009 we carried out works for Gladstone Primary School after preparing the most economically advantageous tender. The works comprised of the refurbishment of the staffroom and staff toilet to the ground floor and first floor male and female staff toilets.
Works began at the end of July for a period of 6 weeks. During this period the school remained closed to pupils but teachers and administrative staff were still in occupation. Measures were introduced to minimise the risk to those in occupation. This included a re-location of the staffroom to a temporary location within the school and a seclusion and segregation area of the staffroom.
In refurbishing the staffroom we had to remove all old floor coverings. Upon doing this we found the original parquet flooring which had probably been laid during the new build and re-organising of the school in 1937 from its original structure in 1914. Because of this find we were able to save on resources and reduce the cost of laying new laminate flooring.
The architect, Ian Caudell, incorporated a dual kitchenette facility with lowered ceiling and full standing bar seating area. This still allowed space for a work station and casual seating area for a busy staffroom environment.
